Where I live, we’re not too far from the city. In the recent past, there have been sightings of coyotes in various parts of the city.
Well, nature has arrived in our area now. Last evening, at about 1 AM, I was out having a smoke (can’t smoke in the building) and I saw a coyote in the neighbor’s yard. Okay, that’s the second time I’ve seen one out here. The first was several months ago and that one was about 300 yards away from me and ran when it saw me.
Well, tonight was the topper. I haven’t experienced this since I was in Arizona on vacation many years ago. As I, again due to restrictions on smoking in the building, was standing outside having a smoke, I heard the unmistakable and quite unforgettable howl of a pack of coyotes south of the building, out in a field. They weren’t more than possibly a quarter to a half mile from me and, believe me, when you hear this, you’ll never forget it ever.
Wildlife is prolific out where I am, but I *never* thought I’d ever see a coyote, much less hear a pack calling it’s members together, possibly to hunt for small rodents or rabbits.
I suppose I should let the county animal control folks know about this as these packs do attack small dogs and small children. I know that I would not want to run into that without a large, loaded firearm in my hand.
Wild kingdom indeed. Where’s Jim Fowler when you need him?
