What’s the WORST thing you have to deal with?

August 28, 2007

Moving.

Ask anyone.  Moving ranks right up there with getting a root canal and other life-altering experiences.

Why is moving so bad?  Depends on how much STUFF you have.  In my case, I have a LOT of STUFF and I have NO idea what to do with it.  I’ve already given my garbage men hernias with the STUFF I’ve dumped so far.  They cringe when they arrive at my spot in the alley.  I know.  I saw them do it.  In fairness to them, I mark things that weigh a lot with “HEAVY” on it so they know that they need a couple guys to hoist it into the truck.

On top of that, I’ve got furniture that I have NO idea what to do with.  A friend of mine wants some of it as she’s moving into a tri-level and has NO furniture.

On top of that, my kid has left all sorts of STUFF laying around and that is going to cause issues VERY soon.  I will take one of the file boxes that he left and use it to put my documents into so, at least, I’ll have all that stuff together.  Anyhow, it looks like the garbage guys will need to bring an end loader and dump truck to take everything that’s going to end up out in the alley.

Did I say I HATE moving?  I have one piece of advice that you MUST remember:  Thou shalt not go dumpster-diving, garbage picking, whatever and drag the garbage that others were getting rid of back to your own place.  Because you WILL have to either take it with you, pay exorbitant fees to store it, or make enemies of the garbage men forever when it lands out in the alley.

A funny analysis

August 28, 2007

I got this in my email this morning.  It’s funny and I thought you guys would enjoy it.

Recent weather and gasoline issues are proof of the existence of a new chemical element. A major research institution has recently announced the discovery of the heaviest element yet known to science.

The new element has been named Governmentium.

Governmentium (Gv) has one neutron, 25 assistant neutrons, 88 deputy neutrons, and 198 assistant deputy neutrons, giving it an atomic mass of 312.  These 312 particles are held together by forces called morons, which are surrounded by vast quantities of lepton-like particles called peons.

Since Governmentium has no electrons, it is inert; however, it can be detected, because it impedes every reaction with which it comes into contact. A minute amount of Governmentium can cause a reaction that would normally take less than a second to take over four days to complete.

Governmentium has a normal half-life of 4 years. It does not decay, but instead undergoes a reorganization in which a portion of the assistant neutrons and deputy neutrons exchange places. In fact, Governmentium’s mass will actually increase over time, since each reorganization will cause more morons to become neutrons, forming isodopes.

This characteristic of moron promotion leads some scientists to
believe that Governmentium is formed whenever morons reach a critical concentration. This hypothetical quantity is referred to as critical morass.

When catalyzed with money, Governmentium becomes Administratium…an element that radiates just as much energy as Governmentium since it has half as many peons but twice as many morons.

Epilog de rain

August 25, 2007

Well, the storms have passed.

No damage here.  Next door neighbor lost a large-ish branch off his tree but other than that, we lucked out.

Not so elsewhere.  About three blocks from here, the village was busy cleaning up what looked to be an entire tree off someone’s parkway.  On Wentowrth, someone lost an entire oak tree so that must’ve been an eyeopener.

I still don’t know what the heck was going on yesterday.  We had more traffic on Ridge Road yesterday than I’ve seen in a LONG time.  It appears that it’s still happening but who knows WHAT was the cause.  I’d guess that the Kingery was still flooded down by Indy Blvd or Kennedy Ave.

I am hoping that this link works.  You need Windows Media Player.

Endeavour lands!

Whew

August 21, 2007

I am happy that the shuttle made it home safely, despite the gouge on the bottom of the vehicle.

Eventually, I hope to find the video of the landing.

Earning the desks

August 18, 2007

This is probably one of the most powerful things I've read. It's
worth passing on.

Back in September of 2005, on the first day of school,
Martha Cothren, a social studies school teacher, who
teaches a course on Military History at Robinson High
School , did something not to be forgotten in Little
Rock, AK.

On the first day of school, with permission of the
school superintendent, the principal and the building
supervisor, she took all of the desks out of the
classroom.

The kids came into first period and there were no
desks.. They obviously looked around and said, 'Ms.
Cothren, where's our desk?'

And she said, 'You can't have a desk until you tell me
how you earn them.'

They thought, 'Well, maybe it's our grades.'

'No,' she said.

'Maybe it's our behavior.'

And she told them, 'No, it's not even your behavior.'

And so they came and went in the first period, still
no desks in the
classroom. Second period, same thing, third period
too. By early afternoon television news crews had
gathered in Ms. Cothren's class to find out about this
crazy teacher who had taken all the desks out of the
classroom.

The last period of the day, Martha Cothren gathered
her class. They were at this time sitting on the floor
around the sides of the room. And she says,
'Throughout the day no one has really understood how
you earn the desks that ordinarily sit in this
classroom.' She said, 'Now I'm going to tell you.'

Martha Cothren went over to the door of her classroom
and opened it, and as she did 27 U.S. veterans,
wearing their uniforms, walked into that classroom,
each one carrying a school desk. And they placed those
school desks in rows, and then they stood along the
wall. And by the time they had finished placing those
desks, those kids, for the first time I think perhaps
in their lives, understood how they earned those
desks.

Martha said, 'You don't have to earn those desks.
These guys did it for you. They put them out there for
you, but it's up to you to sit here responsibly to
learn, to be good students and good citizens, because
they paid a price for you to have that desk, and don't
ever forget it.'

Friends, I think sometimes we forget that the freedoms
that we have are freedoms not because of celebrities.
The freedoms are because of ordinary people who did
extraordinary things, who loved this country more than
life itself, and who not only earned a school desk for
a kid at the Robinson High School in Little Rock, but
who earned a seat for you and me to enjoy this great
land we call home, this wonderful nation that we
better love enough to protect and preserve with the
kind of conservative, solid values and principles that
made us a great nation.

'We live in the Land of the Free because of the
brave.'

Please…. remember our Troops!

Things the media never show

August 17, 2007

Lots of things in Iraq go on without the media ever showing any of it.  Here are some pictures of the human side of things.

New podcast I’ve found and a link

August 16, 2007

Recently I’ve come across Trucker Tom’s Podcast. This is an ex-system admin who’s now a truck driver and has opinions on a lot of things.

Recently, he posted thoughts on the I-35 disaster. As an OTR driver, he’s got his ideas as to why it failed. Here’s the link to his post on the matter:
